Why Homeschooling Isn't Just for Homeschoolers

Why Homeschooling Isn't Just for Homeschoolers

There are a lot of things we think we fail to do as parents because we want the best for our kids and some decisions we make don't end up working towards our family values. Many of those decisions sound great in theory, but when applied, we learn very quickly that they won't work for us as a whole. For us, that decision was to homeschool.

Despite over a year of studying homeschooling. Despite the hours of phone calls and interviews in trying to assess whether or not it was right for Max (5). Despite the three months, we tried to make it work, in the end, we all made the decision that public school was best for him. So this month, pushing all my worries and preaching aside, we sent him off to his first day of school.

Start early and start easy.

That was the best advice I received when it came to teaching my boys about responsibility and personal finance. We've gone back and forth about whether or not to implement chores. Some finance guru's say do it, others like Cameron Herold say chores are important, but that they shouldn't get an allowance and the chores should be one's the kids select themselves.  He advocates for the entrepreneurial mindset. I agree.

But let's step away from the idea of chores versus allowance for a minute. Cameron explains that “allowances, by nature, are teaching kids to think about a job. An entrepreneur doesn’t expect a regular paycheck. Allowances are breeding kids at a young age to expect a regular paycheck.” So then, how do you teach them about responsibility, commitment and how that ties into earning money?

5 Ways to Get Over your Phone Addiction During Family Time

There comes this point in our lives as entrepreneurs that we grow this insatiable need to always be on, to be connected and available. The problem isn’t that we are always ‘available’, it actually stems from allowing ourselves to be available. Checking our phones for a quick sec sets a terrible example for our family and those around us, especially if it’s during some inopportune moments (even to just post something on Instagram.) One more second, one minute, I need 5 minutes, 10 more minutes.... IT ADDS UP! And the people around you, like your kids, start to feel as though they are being ignored.

In Family & Business: Trust the Process

Lately I have been experiencing anxiety (as most parents do ) around my oldest son’s frequent temper tantrums. On one of the worst days yet, I happened to be taking an Uber ride home from work, and was chatting to the driver about the situation. A father of three older kids, he had the experience to know what I was going through. He sat and listened to me talking (ok, maybe complaining) about the situation, and after about 10 minutes, he said to me softly “Darling, just trust the process”.
